"It was an authentic but demanding experience. We cleared snow in a semi abandoned mountain village, always walking with snowshoes through half a meter of snow. Temperatures stayed below zero, there was no heating, and we slept in thermal clothes under several blankets. Despite the hardship, the views were amazing and the experience unforgettable."

"Well organized project. Great team leader and warm hosts. In particular, the hosts worked with us rather than treating us like workers (unlike other projects). It was meaningful and rewarding. Highly recommended."

"We took the short version of the camp and it was very intense. No time wasted. The host family was amazing and I loved the food. However, I recommend to try the longer camp so you can spend more time with the host family and get more meetings with the locals. In case you choose the longer option, make sure with the leader there are more of you."

"The workcamp was very well organized. We had all the information we needed in advance in the info sheet. The work was diverse, and not that difficult, it was a good combination of manual work and discussions with the locals. We also lived with a very nice host family, which enabled us to get to know the culture well and try a different way of life."

"The experience at Maki farm was amazing. Such a wonderful and magical place. It was like travelling in a time machine and doing every job as it was done in the past. I am fortunate and grateful of living this opportunity. Eventough the job was pretty tough and physical demanding, we could do it and did it very well."

"At the start of the workcamp I was a little stressed but the farmers were all very friendly and reassuring. The first days of work were quite easy but it got a little tough when it started to rain. Despite everything, the farmers remained attentive to our needs and were very careful to ensure that we did not overextend ourselves. The day of vacation to which we were entitled was a pure joy with a few visits ending with the hot springs which was a very beautiful experience."

"At first, you might find the work a bit tough because you'll be working outdoors and facing factors like hot weather, rain, and different time zones. But you'll adapt quickly since there's free time in the evenings between workdays to go out for meals, explore the surroundings, and rest.
Everyone at the camp is great and friendly, so if you encounter any difficulties, they'll help you out if they can. And what I really love about this work camp is the scenery and the delicious food. If I had the chance, I'd love to come back here again."

"Advantages
- High number of activities.
- High social interaction with local community
- Good communicatiion
Disadvantages
- Sometimes overwork, Saturday is always busy. Even Sunday can be.
- Accomodation is taken care by volunteers . Missing some ammenities, like sheets..
- Food is decent, however volunteers usually buy some extra for themselves"

"It was one of the best decisions of my life to come to Sri Lanka for a workcamp. As a tourist I wouldn’t have this kind of oppurtunity to see how people actually live there and didn’t see all the rural places and tasted the local food. And I met so many nice people during my stay including the other volunteers. I will never forget this experience!"

"I fell really disappointed with this workcamp. They don't follow the planning, I understand some changes in the work hours are normal, depending of the weather. But, for example one day we worked for 10 hours, the other days more or less It was the same.
Every membres fell very tired so we didn't do much life in common.
It was very bad experience"

"There was no organization. The girls didn't have futons to sleep on. There were no free time activities or activities to promote knowledge of the local culture. We were free labor, with days of more than 10 hours a day in the boat trip activity. It's everything we did at the workcamp."

In short, the poor rating is due to lack of planning, communication and leadership from both the host and team leader."

"Overall, I did enjoy my time at the workcamp and learnt a lot from the local people as well as other team members. My recommendations are as follow:
(1) there should be a hub for former batches of international volunteers to connect and share information.
(2) forest work is a bit exhausting for first time volunteers, especially for middle-aged."

"The first country that left a mark on my heart. The first country that made me cry and the first country where I felt at home... All thanks to the amazing local people and my new family. I won't exaggerate when I say that I never once encountered a bad mood in their company. Everyone is so cheerful, non-confrontational, pleasant, friendly, smiling, and relaxed.
As for my family, I lived in a little house with three amazing aunties: auntie Mag, auntie Sathi Devi (both aunties also known as my grandmas or girlfriends), auntie Gnanes, dog Toffie, and a female dog Šiba. Besides this home, I also worked in two larger retirement homes => amazing people with a sad ending, but still happy, nonetheless. Moreover there were also amazing employees, who cannot be overlooked. My new sisters Radhika and Sumati or the most kind-hearted boss…and other lovely stuff…
Shared walks, shopping, singing, gardening, jokes, board games, exercise, celebrations, deep conversations, tears, or when auntie Sathi Devi told me she would like to die knowing that someone would take care of me (referring to my love life)... All of these things, whether we want it or not, build a family bond among you. Apart from the happy moments, I unfortunately also experienced a sad moment when one uncle passed away in front of my eyes. This makes the wishes from my aunties even more meaningful when they wish me a beautiful life that has actually just begun for me... Unfortunately, everything has its end, and I am proud that I will carry their legacy and memories of them and us for the rest of my life.
Thank you for everything aunties, you will be always in my heart ❤️"

"Overall, it was nice but I consider there were too much working hours. I apply for this project because of Awa Odori festival. In the project, they didn't suggest cultural activities (like going to the tourist office which were doing some dance practice-free) or we didn't have my time to really enjoy the festival. Because of typhoon, I left early."

"I would recommend NICE projects to my friends, but not this work camp.
As for the way the camp was organised, accommodation, pick up, food were all ok. The company of fellow volunteers was brilliant! However, every day unexpected work was to be done, which was not pleasant. The host did not plan everything well or did not care to inform us."

"The work wasn't really hard. It was more difficult to deal with sweating from the heat (you need to protect all the skin from the sun, so sometimes it's very hot). But breaks saves, so you can have a rest often and a pleasant cold water.
The time with other volunteers was cool. Our host, Sasaki-san was very kind and nice ^_^"

"I had such an amazing time! The work was great, and the local community of Tondabayashi was so incredibly nice to us. The only thing I wish for the next time is that everyone is gets fully included in the group. The Spanish boy wasn't really part of it and due to the language barrier we couldn't fully include him either (he didn't speak English)."
