"Our group of approximately 12 volunteers stayed at a scout lodge for the first three nights, with only one key available, which restricted a little bit our freedom of movement from the beginning.
During the initial three days of the Cursa di Ciclopi event, the organizers constantly questioned our identity and purpose, resulting in long waits and feelings of insignificance. It appeared that communication between the organizations was insufficient.
The project largely involved waiting, which was quite frustrating. On our first day in Cefalu, we were supposed to begin work with the organizers of Cursa di Ciclopi, but they did not assign any tasks, leaving us waiting all day. We constantly received last-minute information without any prior notice. It would have been helpful if they had provided us with time estimates. Daily messages like "someone will come to pick you up in the morning" left us unsure of when to expect them, making it difficult to plan our time and explore local attractions. Unexpectedly, after two days of waiting at the starting point without tasks, we were informed that those days were intended as days off. Then, suddenly at 8 pm on the second day, we were told our ride would arrive in 15 minutes.
One of the volunteers was a vegetarian, and it seemed as though her dietary requirements were overlooked.
Although the agreement stated we should always work together, we often found ourselves working alone at the site.
Instead of working in nature as I had anticipated, I ended up working on city streets.
Our tasks primarily involved waiting at refreshment points and assisting runners as they passed. For instance, in Castell’Umberto, I worked alone for three days, covering both day and night shifts. I had to monitor the runners via GPS signal and allocate my sleeping time accordingly. My hostel was 250 meters away, and since I ran out of data (despite discussions about obtaining a data SIM card), I had to walk 150 meters to access Wi-Fi. Estimating the arrival times of runners proved challenging due to GPS limitations, causing me to sometimes wait in advance or miss runners entirely. It would have been preferable to have a partner to divide the workload. I was relieved when I eventually found an hour to sleep.
Communication with the Cursa di Ciclopi organization was indirect, as it had to be conducted through a colleague who spoke Italian. If I needed to communicate with the organizers, I had to ask him to translate.
Moreover, we lacked logistical support, occasionally facing shortages of food and utensils. Many runners slept at refreshment points, which prevented us from sleeping comfortably in our beds.
The most negative aspect for me was the disruption of my biorhythm, which adversely affected my health."
