Worldwide Friends (WF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 with the mission to promote nature conservation, intercultural understanding, and peace through volunteer activities in Iceland.

In 2026, our focus will be on climate action, community resilience, and sustainable lifestyles — empowering participants to take meaningful action in their daily lives and local communities.
WF organizes a variety of programs, including international projects, seminars and work with the local community. Open to both young people and adults who wish to make a positive impact while experiencing Iceland’s unique culture and natural beauty.

This role combines driver, logistics support, and house caretaker responsibilities for international volunteer workcamps across Iceland.

As a driver, your tasks include picking up and dropping off volunteers from the city center, airport, or camps, transporting participants to work sites and excursions, and supporting logistics such as grocery shopping for large groups. You may also assist in selecting suitable locations for environmental activities such as beach clean-ups.

As a house caretaker, your responsibilities include basic repairs and maintenance when needed, or supervising volunteers performing these tasks. You will help coordinate cleaning teams, support household management, and ensure the houses remain organized and safe. Occasionally, you may assist with cooking when required.

You will travel around Iceland, as the organization operates several volunteer houses located in different parts of the country. Flexibility is essential, as tasks and schedules may change depending on project needs.

Work activities may also depend on weather conditions, so adaptability is important. As locals say, if you don’t like the Icelandic weather, just wait five minutes—it might change.

Working hours may vary depending on the workcamps and organizational needs. However, you will have two days off per week, allowing time to explore Iceland’s unique landscapes. When required, you may also support the organization by leading camps, welcoming participants, and introducing volunteers to the program and project activities.

During the workcamps, leaders will stay in shared accommodation in a fully equipped house. Rooms are double or quadruple, and beds and bedding are provided. The house includes essential facilities such as a washing machine and Wi-Fi, ensuring a comfortable stay during the project.

Food is provided for the duration of the camp. Participants share responsibility for cooking and cleaning, contributing to a cooperative living environment. The organization provides a balanced and healthy selection of food, including whole grains, seasonal fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and vegetarian and vegan options.

Excursions may include visits to some of Iceland’s unique natural attractions, such as waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava fields, hot springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam vents, and even icebergs.

The program also focuses strongly on intercultural learning and exchange. In the evenings, volunteers from different countries will have the opportunity to present their culture in an informal and creative way. This could include a presentation, games, music, theatre, or any other activity you would like to share. We encourage participants to bring photos, traditional food, music, or other items related to their culture to create enjoyable and informative cultural evenings.

This program offers a unique opportunity to spend meaningful time in Iceland with international volunteers, sharing knowledge, exploring creativity, discussing environmental issues, and learning from different cultures.

The areas around the houses are also excellent for hiking and exploring nature. Participants are asked to respect the environment by planning ahead, staying on marked trails, properly disposing of waste, and leaving natural areas as they were found. Wildlife should not be approached or fed, and climbing high or steep mountains without a professional guide is not recommended.

- Handyman skills (appliance installation, carpentry, basic plumbing, minor electrical wiring, maintenance, and renovation) DIY skills, motivation, and personal qualities are just as important.

- A driving Licence is essential. Winter driving experience (snow/icy roads) is considered an advantage.

- An Intermediate to Upper-Intermediate level of English is required. Other languages are seen as an advantage.

- Our leaders have to be Positive and Highly Motivated. Proactivity and Organizational skills are a must. Time-management skills and ability to work under time pressure during high peaks of the season.

We will communicate via WhatsApp, there's free Wi-Fi on the bus and at the terminal. Unfortunately, If your arrival at BSI is after 20:00 p.m. we won’t be able to pick you up. In this case, you can book a hotel for your stay (we will pick you on the morning of the next day) or take a taxi to our accommodation.
