InterCultural and Language (ICL) Songkhla

, Thailand

In partnership with

Intercultural and Language (ICL) – Songkhla: Learning and sharing
intercultural experiences and language remain the main purpose.
Volunteers will share and exchange culture, language, and knowledge
with the local community and students in schools.

English, as a global language, and intercultural learning are important for
local Thai people to understand and become global citizens. English is
also a gateway to opening minds and accessing knowledge. The project,
created by VSA Thailand in 2011, has been successful for eight years.
Former volunteers provided opportunities for children in schools and the
local community. Many local people improved their English skills
through exchanges with international volunteers. At the very least, they
tried to speak English more and became more confident in interacting
and working with foreigners, even if they were not fluent in the
language.

Moreover, volunteers’ activities had a significant impact on the local
community, which became more welcoming and trusting of foreigners.
Local people had the chance to learn about, accept, and adopt different
cultural ways of life.

Songkhla is a VSA base, and many schools here require international
volunteers to teach. Therefore, volunteers can expect to work in rural
schools that are ready to accommodate them during their stay.

Description of the Work

Aims
Volunteers are the key person to make the students, teachers and Local community
speak using English in daily life.
They learn English in the class but only in reading and writing (grammarly) but very
lacking in speaking with Each other due to the culture barrier. When there are
international volunteers, the environment in the school and community force to use
English and they also couple exchange with volunteers.
From Monday to Friday, 08:30 - 16:30, the volunteer will be at the school, teaching for
3-4 hours a day and preparing lessons in the teacher's room. In addition, the volunteer
will participate in school activities such as Sports Day, Buddhist Day, and more.
Workplaces
There will be 2 schools which are Ban Krogluek School and Ban Maab Grad School. The
local host may schedule Monday-Wednesday work in one school and Thursday and
Friday work in another school.
You will meet different classes each day. So the activities you prepare can be used
similarly in both school and each class.
