Worldwide Friends (WF) is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 with the mission to promote nature conservation, intercultural understanding, and peace through volunteer activities in Iceland.

In 2026, our focus will be on climate action, community resilience, and sustainable lifestyles — empowering participants to take meaningful action in their daily lives and local communities.
WF organizes a variety of programs, including international workcamps, seminars, local community projects, and exchange programs, open to both young people and adults who wish to make a positive impact while experiencing Iceland’s unique culture and natural beauty.

This project includes a variety of activities focused on soil restoration and environmental sustainability. Worldwide Friends began restoring this site in 2023 after it had been abandoned for several years, transforming it into a welcoming home and learning environment.

The main focus of the project is soilwork and environmental restoration — combating erosion, nourishing the land with organic waste, and planting trees to support long-term revegetation. The site covers 300 hectares within a protected Geopark that features several hiking trails. We also monitor tree plantations from previous years and collaborate with the local municipality to maintain hiking paths and surrounding protected areas.

Greenhouse and agriculture-related tasks may also be part of the work but are secondary to the main goal of restoring and protecting the local environment.

When weather conditions are not suitable for outdoor work, volunteers will help with renovation or maintenance tasks such as painting or small repairs inside the house.

Please note that tasks and workshops may vary depending on the season, project needs, and weather conditions. Volunteers should be ready for physical, outdoor work and changing weather — as we say in Iceland: “If you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes!”
This is a perfect camp for people who like outdoor work and physical challenges.

Working hours are on average 6-7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Volunteers will be staying in the house of Worldwide Friends. The house has 6 rooms from 4 to 6 people mixed. A fully equipped kitchen, several bathrooms, and common areas.
Wireless internet access is provided free of charge at the accommodation.
Washing machine available on site.

Food is included for the entire duration of the work camp; however, everyone is expected to do
their fair share of cooking and cleaning. Since it’s always fun to try new and different dishes,
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their favorite recipes from home!

We also invite everyone to try vegetarian food during their stay with us.

We provide a well-balanced and healthy variety of ingredients, including whole grains, seasonal
fruits and vegetables, pantry staples, dairy products, and vegetarian/vegan options. To help reduce
our carbon footprint, we limit meat consumption and promote sustainable, plant-based meals.

We do not provide soft drinks or candies, but we do offer plenty of ingredients for baking
delicious snacks. As we bake our own bread, feel free to bring your favorite golden-crust recipe
from home!

Please inform us in advance if you have any food allergies or special dietary needs, so we can accommodate you properly.

There are opportunities for fun all over Krýsuvík. From adventurous activities to well-known tourist attractions, this delightful area packs a punch. From great hiking trails among various landscapes (geothermal area, lake, beach, mountain), to bird watching or cultural visits in Reykjavik, you have many activities to choose from. The closeness to nature is always within reach!
It can be tempting to get closer to touch the hot springs but make sure to stay away from them and on the marked path as the heat is 80-100 degrees Celsius.
You should not go for high or steep mountains without a professional guide. Keep in mind this is a highly active geothermal area.

The best time to see aurora borealis in Iceland is between September and April. It’s when the nights are dark enough to see the Aurora. Iceland only gets 2-4 hours of daylight in midwinter, providing endless opportunities to hunt for aurora borealis.

We will also concentrate on intercultural learning and exchange. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will be in charge of presenting their country of origin and culture. It can be a presentation, a game, or a theatre – the form of introduction is up to you! Therefore, we encourage you to bring along some food, photos, or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening amongst other volunteers.

This workcamp allows you to spend an amazing time in Iceland with other international volunteers and to have an incredible experience where participants share their knowledge while exploring creativity, environmental issues, and intercultural learning.
